Sampaloc Lake

Sampaloc Lake is one of the seven lakes which make San Pablo City famous. It is also the most accessible being just in the vicinity of the City Hall. Interestingly, the city hall is called by the locals as Kapitolyo because it looks like one. This has confused me at first knowing that San Pablo is not the capital of Laguna hence, why it would have a Kapitolyo?

To get to Sampaloc Lake, use the city hall (their Kapitolyo) as your beacon because it easier to ask for directions for the city hall.

Once you are in the city hall vicinity, the lake may already be viewed from the park at the left side of the building across the street. There is also a mini park at the lakeside a stone throw away from this one. This park is a favorite for dog lovers as they use the area to show off their pets. We have seen canine friends doing tricks which include diving and swimming in the lake.

A 3.8km concrete road goes around the lake making it ideal for biking and jogging. I heard that efforts are being made to remove residential houses from the lake shore particularly those on the right side of the road if your are moving clockwise. If not for these houses, the view around the lake will be unhampered.

Lake Caliraya

Caliraya Lake is actually situated in the three towns of Laguna, namely Lumban, Cavinti, and Kalayaan. It is a man-made mountain lake complete with coves and sand bars that we could boast internationally.

More than that, it is also a home of several beautiful resorts. You could reach Caliraya by -public or -private transport.

There are several ways to reach this place, but here are the two of it. One from Makati through the South Expressway and the other, from Antipolo, which you could took the zigzagging through the thickly forested rolling hills and rugged ridges of Rizal towns of Teresa, Morong, Baras, Famy and all the way to Laguna towns of Pillilia, Sinoloan, Pangil, Pakil, Paete and finally Lumban where the unique lake is located. The travel time to a distance of about over a hundred kilometers from Manila was two-and-a-half hours by going there privately and of course, much long if you take it publicly.

Underground Cemetery

Built in the 18th century by the Franciscan Missionaries, the Underground Cemetery is enclosed by a circular structure. The intricately designed wall and wrought iron gate with a red-tiled walk leads straight to the small chapel, where an altar-like structure is located. The tombstones are embedded on the brick walls of the cemetery and the basement. At the crypt of the cemetery, according to history, is where the local Katipuneros, or followers of the secret revolutionary societies collectively called the Katipunan, plotted against Spanish rule.

Cozily nestled on the slopes of two legendary mountains, Mt. Banahaw and Mt. San Cristobal, a stream meanders on about 500 feet above sea level and glides down BATO, which started as a tiny waterfall that came out from red earth and giant boulders. The waterfall spread out icy cold water irrigating the lush coconut plantation and a source of life for the different flowers and fruit trees around the area.

Mount Cristobal

Countless legends surround Mt. Cristobal. With its summit taking on a characteristic 'W' shape, like that of stealth bomber, it is flanked by the grander Mt. Banahaw to its northeast, and together, they figure prominently in folklore. For instance, it is said that while Mt. Banahaw is a holy mountain, Mt. Cristobal is the "Devil's mountain", and the two mountains possess good and evil energies that cancel out. The primeval forests of Cristobal, decked with ferns and thorny plants, culminating in its ancient crater, seem to fit the bill of an eerie mountain. Furthermore, there are tales of voices or apparitions, such as the creature called 'Tumao', waylaying mountain climbers; many hiking groups have their own "ghost stories" to tell. Even locals believe these stories; some guides say they have amulets to counteract the negative energy.
