Biñan to revive shoemaking industry

Biñan, Laguna – Local public and private schools (high school and college) are considering the idea to include shoes in the official uniform of students to revive the local shoe-making industry of the City.

Biñan Councilor and Samahan ng Magsasapatos sa Biñan (SMB) Head, Hon. Gat Alatiit, said in an interview that this iniative will help the local shoemakers of Biñan revive the local industry that was known even before Liliw, Laguna became popular.

Known as the footwear capital in the 1960s, the total number of businesses capable of production reached around 500, present in almost 3,000 households. Centers of the industry in Biñan were Barangays Dela Paz and Malabanan. The industry died sometime in 2003 as business owners sold their equipment and closed their shops; their workers engaged in different means of income.

At present, around 30 manufacturers are still present in Biñan. This collaboration with the schools is just one of the ways to slowly revive the industry. (Article by Edward C. Aquino)
