UP glee club garners three awards at Thailand choir festival

The University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS) Glee Club emerged triumphant at the 4th Grand Prix Pattaya International Choir Festival held in Bangkok, Thailand last July 23.
Composed of 28 members, the Glee Club from Los Baños, Laguna took home three awards, namely a gold medal in the Folklore a Capella (F1) category, and silver medals each in the Children’s Choir (B2) and Youth Choir (D3) categories, according to UPRHS’ official website.
The UPRHS Glee Club, trained under Professor Marife Rebutar and Ronilo Jose Flores, competed alongside 15 other groups from countries namely Indonesia, Thailand, Guam and South Korea. The group is the only representative from the Philippines.
As stated in the official website of the Philippine Embassy in Thailand, the competition was organized by the Festa Musicale of Czech Republic, which conducts similar contests in other countries.
In the “Unang Hirit” report, UPRHS principal Professor Liza Carascal said that hard work was the key to the group’s victory.
The competing groups earlier showcased their talent at a concert during the Parade of Choirs event held at the Cathedral of Assumption University in Bangkok last July 21.
Meanwhile, another choir group, the University of the Philippines Los Baños Choral Ensemble (UPLBCE), has also brought home glory for the country by winning at A Voyage of Songs Choral Festival 2011 held from July 11 to 15 in Zhuhai, China.
The UPLBCE—which, interestingly, was put up by former members of the UPRHS Glee Club in 1991—also reaped gold awards in the chamber choir, open mixed choir and folk categories, as reported by GMANews.TV.
Preceding their latest feat, the UPLBCE—currently led by Romel Lomarda—has already received international acclaim for joining the European Union competition, Musica Europa (declared as Grand Champions in 2010 and 2011) and the 1st Institut Teknologi Bandung International Choir Competitions in Bandung, Indonesia (winning four gold medals and a folkloric award in 2010).
GMANews.TV likewise cited that the UPLBCE has represented the country at the Tolosa International Choral Competition, which was held in Spain in 1998.
